Beyond Media Markt: Meeting our customers' needs through a humanised, personalised and connected online/offline experience

Short Description

A connected online app and in-person store for personalisation at scale. You download the app and input your needs and book classes, expert advice, devices and more Connected to a store that is for the community, where you turn up to test products, get expert advice and connect to others through in person classes, wellness sessions, meet-ups, and more. The store of the future is empty. A shell with moveable store fittings to create the environment you need from day to night.

Health and/or wellbeing experience

The inspiration this my store concept is based on innovative concept stores that currently exist or are about to; innovative store design concepts; trends in health and wellness; and predictions for the sector in 2025. This outlined in documents "Inspiration 1" and "2".

The devices that could be solved by Media Markt through this new store concept are based on new and innovative product concepts shown at CES 2019 and 2020, market trends, predictions and information from tech sources. This is outlined in the document "Devices".

Customers of Beyond Media Markt will have the option to download a Beyond Media Markt app.

This app will be subscription-based. There is a free version and tiered options, each tier will allow customers to book different in-person sessions e.g. yoga, meditation; expert session/advice or online using data collected from the app for personalised tips and tricks; and money off certain devices.

The app will also allow them to track their progress and compare this to others like the Peloton app but much more making health and wellness fun and engaging.

Using the app the person can book sessions in the Beyond Media Markt health and wellness area.

When they turn up to the store, it feels like a community and more like a spa/sanctuary than a shop. There are no rows and rows of products. There is meditation-style relaxing music; a person at a reception; and casual seating on wheels with mini desks.

To go into beyond Media Markt, you need to check in at the desk/reception or with an employee holding a device.

Each Media Markt employees has received training on specific areas e.g. relaxation, and many are qualified instructors in Reiki, yoga and often work in the store as combined instructors/store assistants. There could also be Nao robots that. offer advice as well

When I go in the store, I can sit one a chair with a table and opt to view some products to test and try out. They are delivered by a store employees from the warehouse or even a Nao robot, which go back to the store and bring them out. If I opt to purchase an item, I can either get it delivered straight from the warehouse to my home. It is 2025, so deliver within the hour is possible, or I can pick it up on the way out.

These chairs and desk can connect to others to form tables for classes and session in the evening in the store.

There are also small wellness rooms where I can try out new meditation gadgets or have a consulting session with a specialist.

There is a larger room with a flexible floor. Press a button an it has a yoga mat, another and it is hard flooring and you can bring the chairs into the room and it is a classroom.

Also all the walls are flexible and moveable depending on local needs and requirements.

I imagine a future where the store has evening product testings once a month and it is converted to look more like a bar.

During the mornings, the larger room is like a yoga mat, and it is for Mums and babies.

The key is it is a flexible store that combines community and commerce.

Through the Beyond Media Markt app users can select the type of sessions they would like in their local store. Local wellness and fitness instructors can propose sessions and members can vote on their favourite ideas. The store is for the community and designed by the community.

Imagine going to Media Markt for your yoga sessions; to visit a holistic specialist; what if - in the future - you could see a general doctor for expert advice after hours.

What if Media Markt employees were trained to perform basic diagnostics e.g. skin type. What if Media Markt could 3D print health and wellness devices and solutions for you via its 3D printers.

What if you could use expensive wellness equipment in Media Markt in the wellness rooms.

The options are endless and could be dictated by the Media Markt community.

This idea is not just borne from my research but my own experiences in stores like Saturn, Media Markt and Argos in the UK.

My specific frustrations with these stores include:

When I lived in the centre of Vienna, I went to Media Markt to buy a vacuum cleaner and I could not test it, only look at it. Also, when I bought it I had to carry it home, it was super heavy and bulky

When I went to Saturn, I was looking at new devices and the person serving me could not tell me what the recommended device was for my needs.

When I went to Argos, I wanted to test a product but couldn’t, I could only see what it looked like out of the packaging.

My design for the Beyond Media Markt store of the future is in the document "Beyond Media Markt". But, the idea is that there would be some glocalisation e.g. some stores would have paintings by local artists, some would have exercise equipment and some would not. It really would depend on the needs of the local community.

Target group

I have identified three main personas to consider (see 3 personas doc): Busy, stressed out young working professional living in the city near a Media Markt store and can visit frequently - Birgit Mayer Busy working professional living far away from a Media Markt store who is interested in gadgets and health and wellness - Marc Schmidt Mum of a young child who wants to connect with other Mums and will go into a Media Markt once a week (maximum) - Alex Huber Also: Retirees that want the bespoke advice on health and wellness from Media Markt and caregivers. They will repeatedly visit the store for companionship from other retirees and information sessions to improve their health. Couples trying for a baby who want to connect with other couples in the same situation and to get advice on health and wellness gadgets to help them. Women approaching menopause and more. There is no limit to the target groups. The idea is to create local Media Markt stores to meet local needs.
